Is the dryer cold or simply slow?
A completely cold dryer and one that gets warm but takes several cycles are different problems. A restricted lint screen or exterior vent can slow drying even when the heater works. A very wet load from a washer spin problem can also make normal drying seem ineffective.
Start by cleaning the lint screen, checking the selected cycle and trying a reasonably sized load. If airflow at the exterior vent seems weak or the vent is blocked, stop using the dryer until the restriction is addressed.
What can interrupt heat production?
Electric dryers can tumble while their heating circuit has a separate power problem. Gas dryers can also tumble when the gas supply or ignition system is not providing heat. Heating elements, thermal fuses, thermostats, igniters and controls require model-specific testing.
Avoid opening electrical or gas compartments to guess at the failed part. A safety device that has operated may be a symptom of another problem, including poor ventilation, so replacing it without finding the cause may not provide a lasting repair.
